[imp] How to make changes on the languages files ?

I'am using IMP 3.1 RC2
I was wondering whether (and how) it is possible to
make changes on the  languages files.

I made a change on
/po/de_DE.po
but this had no effect.
I suppose that I have to change 
./locale/de_DE/LC_MESSAGES/imp.mo
for this but how ?
Is there a way to generate
./locale/de_DE/LC_MESSAGES/imp.mo
from
./po/de_DE.po
Is this the right way to make changes on the
languages files ?
