Then what is this:

http://www.php.net/manual/en/function.imap-popen.php

Or is this function experimental, broken, incomplete, or something?

I've been wondering for a long time why IMP doesn't use imap_popen(). So,
why? *grin* I tried searching the archives for any discussion of imap_popen
(), but I was unable to find anything of relevance.

If imap_popen() works, then it really should be pretty trivial adding
persistant IMAP support to IMP (:%s/imap_open/imap_popen/g ought to do the
trick).
