It provides a namespace for preferences, so, multiple applications can 
have a preference named "sort_dir" (which they do), and they don't 
interfere. If you marked something like 'fullname' as non-shared, it would 
eventually (functionality that's very new or going to be implemented in 
the future, nothing right now) break things.
