As one of the Admins of TU-Graz I can tell you something about our systems.
Actually we run 2 mail systems one for ~2500 users and the other for ~12000 
users, I will talk about the bigger one:

Hardware:
---------

	Sun Fire 280R
	4Gb-Ram
	2xUltraSparc III 700Mhz CPUs
	2x36Gb mirrored (by Solstcie Disksuite) system disk
	100GB Raid 5 (Infortrend RAID-System) mailspace (to be extended 		soon)

Software:
---------
	Solaris 8
	Cyrus 2.0.16
	MySql 3.23.49a
	Apache 1.3.24
	PHP-4.2.1
	mod_ssl-2.8.8-1.3.24
	IMP-2.2.8 (will be updated in the summer)
	apc (=php cache) cvs-version
	sendmail-8.12.3
	amavisd-new (from 17.05) for virus scanning	

We recieve about 25000-30000 mail/day. Some statistics can be found under

We run this system since a few years, and had no perfomance trouble so far.
