[imp] (From -> [ ] -> Subject) column purpose?

This is probably a stupid question, but I can't find the answer 
anywhere... what is the purpose of the column between "From" and 
"Subject" in the mailbox view? Does anthing ever appear there? or is it 
just for spacing?
