[imp] function to check if mail server is down

It's not a patch but an idea:
How about not checking it, (no performance dip) but returning a message
like:
"Login failed for some reason. Most likely your username or password was
entered incorrectly. Maybe your mailserver is down, click here to test it."
Or whatever, point is, you would only affect performance if t doesn't work
in the first place, and on the user's request.
Please feel free to inform me if I'm full of crap.
