Rodolfo,
My firewall is the same machine that runs everything else. I am running iptables NAT to provide internet access to my computers on the inside which works fine. Computers on the inside do not have any ports blocked to them. I am not using SSL, and I have tested IMAP functionality from the outside.

Karl, how is your firewall set up? If you have NAT'ing enabled, make sure that
there is a port forwarding to everything that you need. I am presuming that
your mail installation is using sendmail (and is either a smart host or you are
forwarding the internal mail to a smart host), the imap port (non-ssl if you're
using port 143) and a web server (like apache) that also is not doing SSL to
the outside world.
Cheers,
Rodolfo
