[imp] database and upgrade question

I'm beginning the move from imp 2.2.8 to imp 3.2.1.  I'm using mysql as the database.  Is the database used by the new version completeley independent of the old one, so I can actually run them side by side while I am testing and configuring?  Or will installing 3.2.1 overwrite part of the old database and make it unusable to 2.2.8? 

I'm not really concerned about migrating data between the two.  It looks like the new horde uses the username 'horde', where the old version used 'hordemgr'.  Is that right?  Thanks for any guidance.
