Upgrade the smtp.php file of your PEAR package. You can download the
latest from:

please, make a telnet to the IP and Port of your SMTP server, once it
responds
type ehlo (and enter)
if you don't see an AUTH=LOGIN line and your Net_SMTP class is old
there is your
problem.
if so, please upgrade the pear packages Mail, Net_SMTP and Auth_SASL
