[imp] IMP on Debian

Does anyone have experience with installing IMP on debian?  I'm getting the following error..

 Fatal error: Call to unsupported or undefined function mysql_pconnect() in /etc/horde/db_mysql.inc on line 73

I'm guessing that error means that i dont have mysql support built into php... so i recompiled and made sure, with the same result.  any ideas would be VERY helpful.  I read the archives and saw the last debian person just didnt have php config'd right, so i recompiled as mentioned and still have the same error...
