Yeah, I discovered this after the fact (of rebuilding PHP).

Is the PHP implementation too... flakey or difficult to use?

I've changed both $conf['utils']['spellchecker'] to have the full path, as
well as the exec() call in spelling.inc to specify "echo" as a full path as
well.

exec("/usr/local/phpbin/echo $tocheck | " . (and so on...)
