[imp] Unable to execute Sendmail

Hello everyone,
    When I try and send mail via IMP, I get an error message saying that
sendmail (/usr/lib/sendmail) isn't executable.
    I'm running RedHat 9 with Spam Assassin.  /usr/lib/sendmail is a
symlink to /usr/sbin/sendmail which is a symlink to
/etc/alternatives/mta which is a symlink to
/usr/sbin/sendmail.sendmail.  Yeah, I know, that is wacky.  But
/usr/sbin/sendmail.sendmail is executable.  I am running php in safe
mode and have restricted binaries to those symlinked in
/usr/local/apache/htdocs/bin and have tried so many different
combinations of linking the executable in that dir and telling horde
which (symlink) to use.
    I'm running authenticated SMTP using LOGIN and also smtps, but my
mail server also relays for hosts in my domain without authentication.

Any input on this is greatly appreciated.
