 Just upgrade the mail server and use imap. The bottleneck, as I see it,
is definitely the mail server and not IMP/PHP.
 I have tested IMP with _really_ large mailboxes (300+ MB) and there is 
really no problem in speed. It totally depends on how fast the mailserver 
is.
