[imp] thumbnail preview for big image attachements

Dear list members,

can anybody give me a small hint what is needed that IMP offers to fetch a
thumbnail preview of big image attachements? I know I had it working in the
past but the support seems to be broken on my system. I didn't change my PHP
configure line through all the updates. I posted it below.

I thought that the prerequisites would be:

gd support
support for the specific image format (jpeg support, gif support etc.pp.)
An image attachement of a supported format with a certain size.

Can anybody help?

Apache 2.0.48 leader MPM, PHP 4.3.4, turck-mmcache
