[imp] SSL or not

Hi,

We are using Linux RH9.0, apache 1.3.29, php 4.3.2 and IMP 3.2.2.
I'm planning to publish the client to internet, so that people from our company
can read their mail outside office.

Do I have to install SSL if they are using their own laptops?? What security
drawbacks do we have if they are not using security connection while reading
mail???

I know that username and password is sent plain, but if they use their own
laptops only?
