I didn't look at the code yet, but this part of the package description
sounds interesting and might be adapted by IMP, at least if the user is
allowed to change the server:

"Mail_IMAP also provides a connection wizard to determine the correct
protocol and port settings for a remote mail server, all you need to
provide is a server, a username and a password."
