Turcke can be setup as a loader ( strictly for loading the encoded stuff) or a module ( functions as a Zend'ish plugin, optimization, etc). Turcke's been pretty much put on the table and replaced anyways, I just haven't moved everything over to the replacement yet ;).

I haven't noticed either way, really . I switched to php5 myself to ensure compatibility of some of the applications I've developed , and don't use IMP on my php4 server
