After a week we finally found the strange cause for our troubles:

Our mail people had made some tests on our Cyrus IMAP server and had generated a
user and files/folders with the name "user.a0000" (on a system where the
hierarchy delimiter is "/").

For some unknown reason (maybe even a Cyrus bug) this had the consequence that
in folder listings from the server a line with "Shared Folders/user.a0000"
appeared twice.

And now at the end we have indeed a IMP question: Could this (the unusual name
or the double appearence) lead to a loop in IMP in the Folder Tree listing
(that was the place where the sessions hung)?

IMP/Horde versions:
Horde 2.2.7
IMP 3.2.6
Turba 1.2.2
