[imp] IMP oddities after system restore

I recently needed to restore my mail/web server from a tape backup.
The system has two horde/IMP installations, one horde 2.2.1/imp 3.2.5,
and the other from CVS HEAD as of about a month ago. Prior to the
restore, both installations were working fine. After the restore, I'm
seeing a strange problem in large (150+ messages) mailboxes, under both
installations.
In short, some new messages are not displayed. At the moment, for
example, Inbox is indicating 1 new message, 211 total, in the folder
navigator. When I go into the inbox, it shows no new messages, but the
second-to-last message (#210) also appears as #211. If I click on
#211, the message that comes up indicates that it is "210 of 211"; if I
click on #210, message #209 appears (which is an entirely different
message). However, clicking on #195 pulls up #195, as it should.
There is no message #196 in the list. Purging deleted messages has no
effect.
The same thing is happening with the HEAD installation and with IMP
3.2.5, which strongly indicates to me that this isn't an IMP problem
per se, but some sort of problem with the mail server. However, I
don't have any trouble with Mozilla Thunderbird, my main desktop mail
client.
The system is running PHP 4.3.10, dovecot 0.99.10. Any suggestions of
places to check would be greatly appreciated!
