popular yes.. but there is also the fedora directory server 
(directory.fedora.redhat.com).

Most implementations (that i am aware of) delegate authentication to IMP 
which in turn uses IMAP.. which uses LDAP for authentication. prefs and 
other things could be stored in a SQL (mysql) database.
