[imp] Seeking advice on slow login times

Hello, IMP experts.

We have a substantial IMP installation (the IMAP server records 68,392)
connections opened from the primary webmail server yesterday), and
speeds, once you have logged in are quite good. Logins are taking from
ten seconds up to a minute.

Loads are generally very low on the webmail, postgres, and IMAP servers.
If I watch processes I see the IMAP connection open AND close
(successfully) in the first 1-2 seconds. I do not see any high database
activity during login, and the database seems to be well tuned (counts
of horde tables return in under a second etc).

I ran horde on a separate testing server (where I also have a test
install of Horde 3.1 and IMP 4.1) and got the same slow login/fast after
that behavior.

I'd appreciate any advice on debugging this problem you might have to offer.

A new user with one message in their Inbox, no Ingo filters, and no
other folders..
>From start of login to Inbox screen: 9 seconds
Inbox Reload: under 1 second

Our versions...
Horde 3.0.11
IMP 4.0.5
Ingo 1.1
Turba 2.0.5

The three servers involved:

webmail - RHEL 4, 2xOpteron, 4GB memory
postgres - Solaris 10, 8-core UltraSPARC T1, 16GB memory
imap - Solaris 9, 4xUltraSPARC III, 8GB memory

The IMAP and Postgres servers don't record any errors; the webmail
server does give us a repeated error in Ingo - evidently soemthing
present in Horde 3.1.x and absent in Horde 3.0.x -->
