FWIW, I've had similar problems(don't exactly recall the size though)
and the solution for me was to recompile php4 with "--enable-memory-limit"
taken out of the Makefile(this is on FreeBSD using the ports system,
however I'm sure the procedure is similar if you compile it manually.)
