[imp] PGP passphrase being refused

I have just installed imp 4.1.3 (from Debian etch) and have discovered  
that it will not accept my PGP passphrase.

I have a passphrase consisting of 17 regular ASCII characters. imp  
tells me "Invalid passphrase entered".

I am seeking some assistance with tracking down and fixing this problem.
