Unfortunately, I've not got much to say on this but copied your answer to  
imp at lists.horde.org so other subscribers may have something helpful to add.

I've never heard of Plesk before - can you enlighten me.

If you are able to log in as a user but not admin, likely is that 
authentication is now working. It would be helpful to know what IMAP or POP 
system you are using... are you happy to reveal this?

Also, what Linux distribution are you running?

Have you tried logging in through a standard IMAP client like Mozilla 
Thunderbird, against your mail system, both as your nonpriviliged users and 
root?
