OK thanks Jan. It didn't work as is (from the wiki)
until I added the Directory directives. My webroot is
/ so I had made that change too. I am using Apache
2.2.8

    RewriteEngine on
    RewriteRule ^/imp/msword(.+) /tmp/msword$1 [L]
    Alias /tmp /tmp/
    <Directory "/tmp">
      Options None
      AllowOverride None
      Order allow,deny
      Allow from all
    </Directory>
