[imp] Auto-Complete Not working with JS error

Suddenly auto-complete is not working in the compose window for multiple
users.  If I [for whom auto-complete is not working] start firebug I see
the following error when opening the compose window:

document.observe is not a function
compose.php?mailbox=INBOX&uniq=1291211868423()compos...1868423 (line 15)
[Break On This Error] document.observe("dom:loaded", functio...ue +=

Any tips / suggestions?
