I am using the default package which comes with RHEL6, which is the preforked version.

Output of httpd -l
Compiled in modules:
  core.c
  prefork.c
  http_core.c
  mod_so.c

Output of: httpd -v
Server version: Apache/2.2.15 (Unix)
Server built:   Oct  6 2011 11:06:33

This wouldn't have anything to do with cores, but gettext is indeed not thread safe, so you should always use the prefork MPM when using PHP with Apache.
