I found that I must also check "Enable S/MIME functionality" in 
Preferences / Other / S/MIME.

After that S/MIME works, and I get the message: "Message verified 
successfully but the signer's certificate could not be verified."

This happens with all signed messages. I am wondering why "the signer's 
certificate could not be verified".

Any ideas?
