Yes it is important you should use something similar to what you have in the 
/etc/imapd.conf

for example I have:

sasl_pwcheck_method: saslauthd -a pam

so in /usr/lib/sasl/timsieved.conf i have:

pwcheck_method: saslauthd -a pam

slighlty different but the idea is the same ;)

you should know what is your pwcheck methode for Cyrus Imapd....

and if you use sasl with timsieved you MUST have an timsieved.conf 
somewhere...

the problem is: all these infos are not the same between Cyrus Imap 1.x and 
2.x...

I use Cyrus Imap 2.1.x and Cyrus Sasl 2.1.x
I don't know what is the required config for 1.x
