I can confirm the symptoms.  My production server has compression on and
it all works flawlessy.  My new machine, to replace the current server, 
displays the classic compression errors, and works fine with compression
off.

So this does happen, but only on some systems.  Probably a php/apache/zlib
combination kind of thing...
