My sincerest apologies for not understanding, but I'm not able to answer this
question:

Is there a reason these are mutually exclusive? I was going to "play" with the
code to see if I could get it to work both ways, but realized that there is
probably a good reason that it is configured this way.

Could you enlighten me?
