I must be clueless. I can't get it working. I did not have the
preferences backend configured. I found the other scripts in
horde/scripts/sql and ran most of them. Here's my sql setup now:

mysql> show databases;
+----------+
Database
+----------+
horde
mysql
test
+----------+
3 rows in set (0.00 sec)

mysql> show tables;
+---------------------------+
Tables_in_horde
+---------------------------+
horde_datatree
horde_datatree_attributes
horde_datatree_seq
horde_log
horde_muvfs
horde_prefs
horde_sessionhandler
horde_tokens
horde_users
horde_vfs
jonah_channels
jonah_stories
+---------------------------+
12 rows in set (0.00 sec)

mysql> select * from horde_prefs;
Empty set (0.00 sec)

mysql>

I've stuck with the default usernames/passwords (horde/horde) for
everything so far (I'll fix that later). The only thing showing up in
horde.log is:

Oct 27 22:48:06 HORDE [error] [jonah] Failed retrieving prefs for skip
[on line 239 of "/usr/share/pear/Horde/Prefs/sql.php"]
Oct 27 22:50:08 HORDE [error] [horde] Failed retrieving prefs for skip
[on line 239 of "/usr/share/pear/Horde/Prefs/sql.php"]

I know I'm close, so please don't give up on me!
