Random thought on solving some performance/flexibility problems:
What about introducing the concept of event references? When you want a
shared event, you send it to other people; if they are using the same
calendar (Kronolith) server as you, it gets stored in their calendar as a
small reference to your original event.
Handling updates could be tricky, but events could also know about
references to them, so they could know to update the times, and things like
description could only be stored once anyways.
It's not quite a fully fledged idea, but it might make shared events much
easier.
