I get the same thing. I've created a calendar, made it shared,
added a user and then I get the same error. My changes/permissioning
does however work. I have the following in hordes conf.php

$conf['sql']['persistent'] = false;  # <- I've also tried setting this to true.
$conf['prefs']['driver'] = 'sql';
