Yes, it looks like guest calendars are currently broken. Hint for someone
looking into this: We manipulate display_calendars in lib/base.php and save
it back to the prefs backend. As guests use the session as the backend, the
value of this variable changes on every page reload.

That's the case.

Don't confuse Show with Read. Enabling Show by default makes sense, because
this is the only way to make the free/busy information work.
