Okay, I'm not at all sure of Suse? Does it use a package system? I know
debian does use a package (.deb) system, as does RedHat (.rpm). For package
systems, it is a simple matter of installing the needed package (in this
case it should be called php-ftp). Any decent package will take care of
the configuration -- if not it means adding a line to your php.ini which reads

extension=ftp.so

Once you install the package and/or modify your php.ini file, you will
need to restart your web server to make it see the changes.

If anyone on the list uses Suse please speak up to the specifics there.

"TAD (Technology Attachment Disorder) is an unshakable, impractical devotion
to a brand, platform, product line, or programming language. It's relatively
harmless among the rank and file, but when management is afflicted the damage
can be measured in dollars. It's also contagious -- someone with sufficient
political clout can infect an entire organization."
