Do the above versions support ldap?  I don't remember, and don't have
them handy to check.

If you have the release versions you mention above, then it should be
there.

Then you are looking at the HEAD branch instead of the RELENG_* branches.
The HEAD code uses conf.xml, the release code uses conf.php.
