I finally found the problem.  The output from /tmp/php.log(error 
messages) was being appended to the output of the SyncML packet.  This 
caused the packets to not be understood, and my debugging was not 
picking it up.  I guess you live and learn.  I have setup MultiSync, and 
it gives very good debugging information.  I will use it as my main test 
client.  It depends on gnome, but it is free, and the debugging 
information is very useful.
