[sync] [patch] is this the right way to use DataTree?

That looks pretty good to me, assuming you think it's best to store the ids
directly, instead of trying to store them in the History objects for each
item... (I can certainly see it that way, and the mapping probably 
isn't needed
outside the sync code).
