Make sure that you correctly specify the server variable (hostspec) 
in sources.php. In my case the server did not allow external sql 
requests, but only local ones. I hade the same problem and changed to 
'localhost' instead of giving the full address of my server 
(webserver and mysql server are on the same machine. From that moment 
on it worked.
