Couldn't you update the extension you wrote for PHP3 to work with PHP4? 
  When this thread came up last October, you didn't seem to think that 
it would be too hard to get it working.

I don't know what other people are running, but currently it only 
supports clear text authentication, which would be a problem for us.   
Most of UMICH's IMAP servers are kerberized - which, looking at the 
code, the CMU stuff was capable of doing at one point.
