[turba] LDAP problems

After a lot of hair pulling I've finally gotten LDAP up, running, and
seemingly happy.  I'm trying now to get personal_addressbook's created for
the users and addou.pl just isn't behaving.  After some modifications to
make it work properly with 2.2's slightly different ldapadd I get this:

[root at lurch home]# ./addou.pl ehicks
Adding ou: ou=ehicks,ou=personal_addressbook, dc=binarymagi, dc=com
adding new entry ou=ehicks,ou=personal_addressbook, dc=binarymagi, dc=com
ldap_add_s: No such object

Anyone know what the problem is now?  The web just tells me that my suffix
needs to match my base DN (whatever that means) but that doesn't seem to be
the problem in my case because slapd.conf matches addou.pl.
