[turba] Turba 2.2 schema upgrade script fails half way through

i've been having trouble getting turba to upgrade from 2.1.6 to 2.2. turns 
out the schema upgrade script is failing after altering the turba_objects 
table so it's not able to transform the fullname into firstname and 
lastname and so on.

the address book contacts are un-editable and new contacts cannot be 
added. error messages respectively are: "The contact you requested does 
not exist" and "Failed to access the address book: Source not found".

i've run the php schema upgrade script as mysql root user and as horde 
user (after giving horde alter privileges on the db). same results.

on one upgrade attempt i got the following error after typing 'y' to 
continue the upgrade after the table alterations:

[ ERROR! ] [db_error: message="DB Error: no database selected" code=-14
            mode=return level=notice prefix="" info="SELECT object_id,
            object_lastname FROM turba_objects [nativecode=2006 ** MySQLserver has gone away]"]


any ideas as to why the script will not complete?
