I just installed the latest aspell:
International Ispell Version 3.1.20 (but really Aspell 0.50.5)

The crash is gone, but now spellcheck does not seem to work at all.
Does not catch mispellings.  I tried w/ conf.php setting of aspell and
aspell -a
