Yes, I have, and I have no good explanation as to why this works,
considering that Util::extensionExists('mbstring') returns 1 and
$GLOBALS['_HORDE_STRING_CHARSET'] returns "UTF-8".

I'll check whether this happens when $ret is empty.
But right now I've ripped out most of my hair just trying to make this
work.. :)
