Another bit of info: If you mark the message as deleted using the 'mark as'
drop down menu the message is marked deleted and the flag *does* stick when
the page is reloaded and is successfully purged when 'purge deleted' is
clicked.  But if you mark the message as deleted by clicking the  'delete'
action, the flag is set only temporarily as Chuck describes.
