Hmmm.... it started doing repeated checks every 2 or 3 seconds again  
late yesterday, on all devices. This morning it was hammering away  
chewing client battery and server resources again.

Then 8 hours ago (lunchtime here) I did two things to the system:

1. Made a change that Michael S had git committed to  
horde/imp/lib/Mime/Viewer/Pgp.php to resolve a php 5.3.3 issue causing  
failures in verifying pgp signed emails;
2. pecl uninstall apc - I had been getting lots of PHP Fatal error:   
Base lambda function for closure not found in  
/var/www/horde/imp/config/prefs.php in the httpd log, even though not  
using APC, so uninstalled it (which made those errors go away).

I restarted httpd, and the system has been running flawlessly for 8  
hours. Go figure...

The last ERR: Unknown message notification occurred before the changes.

There have been no issues with AS at all since then, no unexpected  
initial syncs, no retries, no ERRs.

I will see how it goes over the next few days.
