I played around with it a little bit.

What works is reset of the ActiveSync devices.

So a quick and dirty workaround would be to offer a kind of cronjob to  
reset activesync devices.
I think once or twice a week should be a good balance between data  
usage / battery drain and a up to date addressbook.
