default_identity pref not read

I just noticed for the first time that prefs of the type "special" aren't read 
by default when creating the prefs hash.
I didn't even find a reference to these prefs with grep. How and when are these 
prefs read from the prefs storage?

The problem is, that the default_identity pref isn't populated to imp by 
default what causes problem if you want to access this pref with getValue().
