OK - I lied.  The PHP manual talks about the mailparse functions built in 
to PHP.  Unfortunately, I found this note while following a link when in 
the source directory (of mailparse in PHP 4.2.0):

Mailparse is included in the core of PHP, except for PHP version 4.2 where 
licensing issues meant that it was not possible. Mailparse has been 
rewritten for PHP 4.3 so licensing will not be a problem.
